Web Crossing for the Macintosh requires System 7, MacTCP or Open Transport (Open Transport required for chat), and a web server that supports the 'sdoc' AppleEvent for CGI. The server must have a full TCP/IP connection to a LAN for local serving and/or to the Internet for serving on the Internet. Web Crossing requires 4.5 MB of RAM.
This demo copy of Web Crossing permits you to test the server with two users. To run with more users requires a certificate - for details on ordering your certificate, see the contact information at the end of this file.
Getting Started
1. If you're using the Quid Pro Quo web server, or upgrading to a new version of Web Crossing, read the notes in the next section of this file.
2. When the installer application asks you to locate the web server folder, find the folder that contains your "home page" document - typically this folder contains the web server application (WebSTAR‚Ñ¢, Quid Pro Quo, etc.) as well.
3. When the installer has finished, you'll have a new folder "Web Crossing 2.0.1" on your hard drive with all the Web Crossing files. You'll also have aliases to Web Crossing and the Web Crossing Images folder in your web server folder.
4. The URL to your new Web Crossing conference is the URL to your site, followed by "/WebX". For example, if the URL for your site is "http://www.yoursite.com", the the URL to access the conference is:
http://www.yoursite.com/webx
5. Access your web server in the usual manner.
6. When you run your web browser and open the URL for this conference, you will be walked through the conference setup. You'll find a link to the sysop documentation in the sysop control panel.
Notes for Quid Pro Quo users
Unlike WebSTAR and some other web servers, by default Quid Pro Quo doesn't execute a CGI application unless it has the file suffix ".cgi". After installation you must either reconfigure Quid Quo Pro or rename both the Web Crossing application and its alias in the Quid Pro Quo folder to "WebX.cgi".
Upgrading to a New Version
To upgrade an existing Web Crossing installation to a new version, follow these steps:
1. Shut down Web Crossing.
2. Find the alias to WebX that is located in your web server folder and drag it to the Trash.
3. Find the alias to your Images folder and drag it to the trash. If the web server contains the actual Images folder rather than an alias, relocate the folder or give it a new name. This is especially important if you have created your own image files to replace the standard Web Crossing buttons.
4. Make a backup copy of your database file "webx.db" on floppy disk, tape, or another hard drive.
5. When the installation is complete, copy your webx.db file to the new Web Crossing folder. Retain a backup of the webx.db file until you're sure everything is working properly.
6. Start WebX, and you're back online.

The files and folders included in this distribution are:
guided.exp
The "guided tour". It will automatically be imported to your database if you're installing Web Crossing for the first time. If you're upgrading to this version from a version that didn't originally include the guided tour, you may import this file.
standard.tpl
A sample template file - see the sysop template documentation for details.
survey.tpl
A template file that demonstrates a method of handling voting/surveys.
Images
The Images folder contains the graphics and help files.

AUxxxxxx
A temporary file created by Web Crossing while it is running; the "xxxxxx" represent an essentially random series of numbers that ensure a unique file name.
webx.db
The Web Crossing database. You should back up this file regularly to ensure protection of your data.
Aliases to the Web Crossing application and Images folder will be placed in your web server folder.
